Please note this is about how I do therapy, other therapists may use different methods or only one method.
Welcome to the journey of therapy. As your therapist, I will listen; give you information (psycho-education), help you to deal with worries and intrusive thoughts, help you to plan your life and work and set goals (life coaching), and give you strategies for whatever problem you are bringing to the therapy room.
I will use a mixture of psychological therapies, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT). These therapies help you change the way you think, feel and communicate with yourself and others. Sometimes I might use Solution Focussed Brief Therapy, or relaxation therapy like Benson’s Relaxation Technique, or even a type of hypnotherapy that helps you to deal with unpleasant memories and incidences from the past. Or I might ask you to lie back and relax and do some gentle "Stream of consciousness" therapy to help you remember and come to terms with past memories and issues. This is often called psychodynamic therapy.
I will bring all my years of education, training and experience to help you in the best way that I can.
However, the most important part of therapy is you. You need to feel committed to the process. You need to be willing to make a psychological, emotional, financial and time commitment to your recovery, sometimes over months (on in some cases over years). Having said that, you need to feel you have accomplished something or feel better (even just a little) in six to ten sessions.
You need to be willing to spend time working on your process in between sessions to speed recovery and to re-enforce what you have learned and realised during sessions.
I will provide some materials; you will need to supply a mid-size spiral notebook that opens down the side. Please bring this with you to the next session.
Payment for the session is by Visa, MasterCard, cheque or cash and is due at the completion of the session. I do not provide Eftpos or cash out.
If at any time during therapy you feel dissatisfied or uncomfortable, please let me know. I am concerned that therapy is a constructive experience for you, however please understand that it is sometimes painful and this necessary pain will pass as you proceed on your journey. It can also be a lot of fun. I encourage humour in therapy.
If you decide to terminate therapy, it would be appreciated if you would contact me to let me know why you have decided not to go on with your process. This is important feedback for me and also for you. There is no charge for this.
